Thetford Town Centre

Evocative proposals for a small town centre square transform perceptions, encourage new patterns of use and galvanise opportunities for economic and cultural growth

Patterns of circulation, sun and shadow define new edges within the square, where the alignment of seating walls suggests an awareness of a wider landscape scale. Imagine shifting, windblown sand, caught against rocks and plants Thetford Warren. A stage is cut into the slope; ledges and outcrops contain and define, encouraging people to linger and talk. A bubbling spring echoes the river nearby and contrasting surfaces of glinting black flint and sandy aggregate are evocative of local flintworks. A clocktower archway provides a stunning backdrop to the upper stage, echoing the form of a historic church which once stood here.
