Bangka Belitung.

The unique industrial and cultural heritage of this tin mining area offers opportunities for scientific research which are of international significance and the newly accessible coastline will be a catalyst for developing the island's tourism potential.

SFA's competition entry included a conceptual diagram for the development of the site. The proposals show a series of accessible landscapes which function as permanent 'gateways' to a wider inaccessible zone where processes of natural regeneration predominate.

Given the inherent risks of contamination and the ecological sensitivity of newly regenerating habitats, this model recognizes that successful investment in this vast post-industrial landscape needs to be focused in a few selected places where it can be most effective. The landscape restoration process may subsequently spread beyond these key fixed 'safe' interventions but they represent the initial seeds of activity.
