Wymondham College.

Sheils Flynn's UK office led the design of this award winning courtyard landscape at Wymondham College, which reinforces a sense of identity for boarders who are away from home. It is a hub for socialising, teaching and events, with an outdoor stage for performance as an extension to the music rooms.

Wymondham College's new courtyard for 6th form boarding accommodation is a vibrant, positive space, orientated to maximise exposure to the sun and to provide attractive framed views of the surrounding Norfolk countryside. The courtyard provides a backdrop to the daily lives of the boarders, reinforcing a sense of identity - a 'home from home'. A series of lawns, an elevated grass terrace and seating walls provide opportunities for informal seating, meeting, outdoor teaching and performance. An elevated 'stage' at the apex of the courtyard has been designed in response to the college's request for an outdoor musical concert space immediately next to the music rooms. The courtyard is the hub of the new building complex - a space which works flexibly for formal performances, a quiet chat or an afternoon in the sun with a book.
